De Waag – Nieuwmarkt
Close to the red light district you will find this 15th century building which has had different functions and been a former city gate. It is the oldest non-religious building that can be found in Amsterdam.
The name of the building is the Dutch word for ‘Weigh House.’ However the building did not always use to be a weigh house. It was not until the early 17th century that this building started to serve a new purpose since the old weigh house on Dam square was too small for its function.
After this it has had many more functions over the years of which more recently it housed the Amsterdam Museum & Jewish Historical Museum.
At this very moment you can relax, have a drink or something to eat since it is home to restaurant ‘In de Waag’.
